The coexistence of both a mental health and a substance use disorder is referred to as co-occurring disorders. mental illness can lead people to use alcohol or drugs to feel better temporarily. In other cases, a substance abuse disorder triggers or, in some other way, leads to severe emotional and mental distress. People with mental health disorders are more likely than people without mental health disorders to experience an alcohol or substance use disorder.
